Research

I'm a Research Fellow in the Information Management Group (IMG) within the University of Manchester Department of Computer Science.

My research interests are centred around the use of ontologies to help represent life science resources..

I am currently working on the myGrid project with particular interest in developing bioinformatics service and data ontologies to support service/ workflow discovery and inter-operation. The provenance of workflow generated data is also one of my key research topics.

I previously worked on the Gene Ontology Next Generation Project (GONG) funded as a subcontract to Deborah McGuinness through the DAML program. The project works in cooperation with members of the Gene Ontology Consortium to asses the feasibility of using a DAML+OIL based approach to help maintain and extend the current Gene Ontology.

Background

Born and brought up just south of Manchester, so I haven't got far! I originally trained as a medical doctor at the University of Cambridge, and worked for a short time as a junior doctor at Addenbrookes, Cambridge and Welwyn Garden City. Having acquired an interest in computers from my brother (Mr Traction Control), I made a sideways move into a job at the Medical Informatics Group at Manchester University in 1998. It was during this time that I was introduced to the world of ontologies and became part of the 3 year Drug Ontology Project. I began working in the IMG group in 2002.
