There are two kinds of session: attendance only, and deadline. A deadline
session has associated with it some work which students have to complete and
get marked. These deadline sessions each have 3 dates:
- The (unextended) deadline: this is always the end of the session.
- The extended deadline: this is normally the start of the following
session, although it can sometimes be the start of a later session. But it is
always the start of a session, to allow work completed by it to be
marked in that session. Students have a right to obtain the extension from the
deadline to the extended deadline, without penalty.
- The excuse expiry: for special circumstances, a student may be given an
excuse for not meeting the extended deadline. There are two kinds of excuse:
expiring and non-expiring. Supervisors can only award expiring excuses. The
date of expiry is normally the start of the session following the extended
deadline: this date is printed near the top of the sheet.
So for example, for a typical fortnightly laboratory in week B, the deadline
in week 2 can be extended to the next session in week 4, and an excuse for
good reason may be awarded by you to further extend this to the next session
in week 6.
As an exception, excuses you award for the last real session (i.e. the one
before the Marking session) are non-expiring.
