Introduction

This document is aimed mainly at new members of staff, but it's also a useful refresher for old hands. There is unavoidably a large amount of material here, since we wish it to have several uses: as a tutorial and reference manual to the ARCADE system; as a guide to the role of Laboratory Supervisor; and as a motivation for why we consider this to be a good way to operate the laboratories (strangely there are some who disagree with the philosophy!). Some material is therefore repeated.

It assumes the `normal' structure appearing in most laboratories. You might find yours is slightly different. In this case please interpret these instructions accordingly.
