WaveRider - Turns Brainwaves into Music!
"You can make your brainwaves sound like an exotic flute, your muscles like a bluesy bass line and your heart like an exploding galaxy, or even a funky drum beat."
The WaveWare software provides a variety of biological signal processing techniques including real time frequency analysis of brainwaves and extraction of heart rate!
WaveRider jr. has two low noise channels for reading signals from the brain, heart and muscles.
WaveRider Pro has four low noise channels providing more inputs.
Both units have a single channel to measure skin resistance (GSR).
The WaveRider unit connects to a PC running Windows 3.1 or greater, with either a sound card or MIDI interface hooked up to one or more external synthesizers.
WaveWare 1.03 is a Windows application that reads, displays and stores the biosignals from Waverider.
WaveWare outputs MIDI notes, velocities and controller messages on 16 MIDI channels. You can specify note ranges, scales and keys as well as create your own scales.
Included in the WaveRider package are: WaveWare software for Windows, head and arm bands, finger clips, electrode leads, electrode gel, and user manuals. It connects to your PC via a DB-9 serial port.

Making music with your brainwaves is just one thing you can do with WaveRider. Signals from your brain, heart, muscles and skin can be played as music, displayed on a computer, processed and stored. WaveRider is used in a wide variety of settings including musical composition, performance art, kindergarten, juvenile jail, and as an adjunct to relaxation. WaveRider is a multimedia input device, a musical instrument and a compositional tool, in use in Germany, Holland, Spain, Britain, Scandinavia, Australia, Japan and the United States.

You can specify note ranges, scales and keys as well as create your own scales. You can make your brainwaves sound like a pentatonic flute, your muscles like a bluesy baseline or your heart like an exploding galaxy (or perhaps a drumbeat). Waveware provides a variety of biological signal processing techniques including real time frequency analysis of brainwaves and extraction of heart rate.
For Macintosh users WaveRiderMAX is available. WaveRiderMAX comes with WaveRider hardware and several MAX objects for reading the WaveRider, processing biological data and displaying fast graphics. It is used with MAX, a graphical MIDI programming language from OpCode. WaveRiderMAX is geared to the hardcore MIDI developer/student/musician. A Macintosh application is in the works.
WAVERIDER IN ACTION
Disadvantaged Milwaukee youth learn how to operate professional audio and video equipment in a program called T.E.A.M. VOC. ED. WaveRider was a major component of the program during the Summer of '94 when it moved into a juvenile detention center. The juvenile offenders developed an understanding of biofeedback, computer technology and the interrelationship of their thoughts and physical actions. Introspection was a major component.
KIDS, WHALES AND BIRDS
Kids at CAL POLY TECH are using the WaveRider to control the sounds and images of irds, whales and dolphins with their biological signals. As participants in the Children's Digital Audio Project they are exploring sound, nature and biology through a variety of technologies. Marc Dumas the creator of the project says: "Sound functions for many species as a way of identifying the social and physical environment. Digital media offers the flexibility to map virtually any input to any output. In traditional music gesture is mapped to pitch in time. Biological signals are utilized as forms of expression to foster an understanding of both the digital and natural environments."
WaveRider will be a part of a system to control lasers in the planetarium at the Flandrau Science Center next year.
WOMAN ON WIRES
Bay Area performance artists Beth Custer, Billy Lynn & Brenda Huthison used the WaveRider in BODY SURVEILLANCE at the EXPLORATORIUM. Beth Custer was suspended from the ceiling from cables while her mind and lycra clad body triggered sampled sounds. The three day performance received television coverage locally and in Britain.
Television in Holland, Germany, England and the United States has featured WaveRider.
WaveRider has been written up in numerous magazines in the fields of computers and electronic music including: Keyboard, Electronic Musician, Wired & Computer Shopper.
Most recently WaveRider is the COVER STORY of MicroComputer Journal Nov/Dec.
