Adaptive and Autonomic Systems
Adaptive systems respond automatically to events as they unfold, generally with a view to improving performance. Autonomic computing includes both adaptive systems and activities that seek to reduce the effort required to configure or manage a software artifact. Research in this area in the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester investigates both specific applications and generic techniques. Specific applications include adaptive query processing and adaptive workflow evaluation, and generic techniques include the use of utility functions and control theory.
