Signal transduction during embryogenesis in fucoid algae

Abstract

Embryonic stem cells of Fucus and Pelvetia (fucoid algae) provide a unique opportunity to examine what determines fate at a cellular level because of their unusual life cycle. This review describes the signalling cascade in cell fate determination during embryogenesis in fucoid algae. During this process, external signals such as gravity, ionic gradients and light are perceived and amplified to determine cell polarity by axis formation and fixation. Calcium ions, gated channels, secretory vesicles and the cytoskeleton are all discussed with reference to their roles in the localisation of actin, beta-tubulin and calmodulin-binding proteins during embryo development.
