OPNET is a comprehensive simulation software package. It allows the simulation of large communications networks to help us to understand, model, and investigate the performance of advanced topics such as communication/network architectures, communication/network protocols and applications, and wired and wireless communication systems, etc. 

The OPNET package provides attractive features to assist the simulation. These features include graphical specification of models; process models that allow user-defined functions, integrated data analysis tools, and a huge library supporting well-known communication and Internet protocols and systems. 

We currently use the OPNET package to set tutorial and laboratory assignments in  the Mobile Computing Courses and have recently used it to conduct the following PhD research project

OPNET is used for laboratory exercises and coursework assignments in the teaching of this MSc Advanced Computer Science module.

Aim of course

Understanding of concepts underlying current developments in mobile communication systems and wireless computer networks

Learning Outcomes

1) Understanding of the systems, protocols and mechanisms to needed to support mobility in communications and computing equipment such as mobile phones, portable computers, PDAs, etc.

2) Understanding of the issues involved and techniques used in the design of Medium Access Control protocols for wireless Networks

3) Understanding of digital transmission methods, radio propagation and the effects of radio interference

4) Practical experience and analysis of the effects of radio interference on transmissions between a wireless LAN access point and a mobile computer, and the effectiveness of bit-error control techniques.

5) The experience of using an industrial standard network simulation package:  OPNET
