WHAT SKILLS HAVE YOU DEVELOPED DURING THE WORKSHOP?
- Communicating with different types of audience
- To communicate computer science to school children including presentation and writing
- Presentation skills
- How to develop an idea and end up with a presentation
- How to simplify rather complex research to be useful for non-professionals
- Dealing with kids and engaging with them
- An appreciation of what's required in developing material for school children
- Presentation skills
- Working with school children
- Understanding more about how to grab children's attention and how to keep it for longer
- Thinking more abstractly about applications of research, taking a step back
- Like the off-the-wall creative thinking methods
- Communication with kids, involve new ideas-issues-topic in your PhD in order to be able to communicate
- Presentation skills, writing paper in CS for social issues
WHICH PART OF THE WORKSHOP DID YOU ENJOY THE MOST?
- Going to the school
- Developing the activities, practice and show that to school children
- Preparing the presentation and the presentation to the school
- Making CS accessible, how you can communicate - shift away from lecture style
- Working on the fun presentation
- Working with school children
- Paul Curzon's activities were excellent. Steve Mesure's advice on presentation and engagement
- School visit
- Developing the activity and actually trying it out in practice
- Assisting/talking through/working with each group
- School visit - we checked our result, received informal feedback, we are ready to change in the next step
- Paul Curzon's lecture, activities and Steve's lecture
WHICH PART OF THE WORKSHOP DID YOU ENJOY THE LEAST?
- The 30s presentation was very challenging and important but since there was no chance for another go, there was not enough time for enjoying the event. Although it was the nature of the event and it was very useful anyway
- Why do engagement - but because I'd seen it before
- All of it was good really
- Some talks not terribly useful, could have better spent the time developing stuff
- 30s pitch - was pretty tough
- There were parts I had done before
- What do you think we should change about the workshop?
- If there are more events like this, it will be useful to invite people from out of the group for some presentations. This may help adding new things to the group
- The main thing is to get recognition and acceptance (costing) for outreach activities
- Keep to break times - I need my coffee
- I would imagine that more time needed on creating the activities themselves. But then there is always the need to get a group together and we did have usable material in the time limit. Difficult!
- Rearrange the activities so that you can overcome any true limitation
- Few more presentations from the participants
ANY OTHER COMMENTS
- Reflection and feedback sessions gave us a good chance to learn how to do it better
- Public engagement and dissemination is important, but we really need strategic attempts - we can't rely on individuals
- This was no-nonsense, hands-on stuff that got us from zero to teaching kids in two days with minimal pain and anxiety. Very well done to organisers
- Thanks for all the hard work!
- Please upload the photos and videos of the event in order to be able to download them
